Often overlooked in favour of its famous neighbours, Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most rewarding parks. Its landscape is defined by giant baobab trees, some many centuries old, rising above golden grassland and the winding Tarangire River.
During the dry season the river becomes the only permanent water source for miles around, drawing extraordinary concentrations of wildlife. Elephant herds here are among the largest in Africa, and you’ll also find buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, followed closely by lion and leopard.
Tarangire is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with hundreds of recorded species. With fewer vehicles than the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, it offers a wonderfully unhurried start or finish to a northern circuit safari.
